Chairman of the Board of Management speaks to young people

Essen: Around 60 high school pupils from Marl, Dinslaken and Mülheim an der Ruhr have travelled to Essen today (Wednesday, 24 February) to join a young people's event in the "Dialogue with Youth" series. During the event, the visitors were able to speak first hand to Dr. Guido Rettig, Chairman of the Board of Management of TÜV NORD Group, where questions of current interest concerning business, the economy and opportunities for the future were at the top of the agenda. Before the discussion, the pupils received an insight into the various areas of activity of the TÜV NORD Group. They learned that the group is not only concerned with vehicle testing, but also helps its customers to achieve climate protection goals and monitor technical plant and equipment.

Dr. Rettig was happy to receive the well-thought-out questions of the young people, remarking "I am impressed at the extent to which our young visitors are engaging with current economic questions."  He also emphasised the importance of a basic knowledge of business. "Thought and action which focuses on business creates opportunities for the future and is the basis for all entrepreneurial activity." The Chairman of the Board of Management of TÜV NORD Group was of course particularly happy to hear questions relating to technology and safety: "Safety is at the very centre of our work, and I would like to emphasise this", he said. Finally, Dr. Rettig thanked all those concerned for the lively nature of the discussion: "The forum provided by the "Dialogue with Youth" is a good opportunity to have a face-to-face discussion with young people, the workers of tomorrow, and to get to know their point of view. This is of great benefit both to them and to me."

Ulrike Gussmann, Head of Vocational Training at TÜV NORD Group, coordinates the Dialogue. "We want the high school pupils to gain experience from this event that they can use in their future life."  This approach is also reflected in the education and training approach within the TÜV NORD Group: "We involve young people in projects like the "Dialogue with Youth" and in environmental and social projects. This helps them learn how to work within a team and strengthens initiative and self-reliance", she explains. In addition to developing technical competence and skill in the use of specialist methods, the training concept includes targeted development of social skills.

More than 3,500 pupils from 49 different high schools and comprehensive schools in the "Ruhr Metropolis" registered for the "Dialogue with Youth" series of events, numbering 51 in all, in order to gain practical insights into the world of business.

For many schools in the Ruhr region, the Dialogue has become fully integrated into the teaching programme, providing a truly practical extension to the business themes already discussed. The young people are invited to visit the boardrooms and management of companies in the region for one whole afternoon. This insight into the world of business is a unique opportunity for the young people to expand their horizons - for business becomes real to them, where it is happening.
But the real focus is on the pupils themselves: the young people are given active support in the development of their individual interests and perspectives while curiosity about the nature of business is encouraged.
