3,500 tonnes of steel inspected in the Airrail Center Frankfurt
Using its superb knowledge of welding technology, TÜV NORD Systems is currently supporting the repair and renovation of the Airrail Center at Frankfurt Airport, now known as the Squaire. In total, 3,500 tonnes of steel in the building have to be repaired or replaced, and in some cases the elements weight 40 tonnes each. These measures are necessary because - despite prior random sample testing at the manufacturer's factory in China - the material and the steel structure exhibited cracks and defects. In order to investigate these, the future operator of the Airrail Center approached technical advisors, who recommended TÜV NORD Systems to carry out the welding-related tests and investigations.
The challenge lay in the assessment of the basic Chinese material and in the quality of the steel construction and welding that had been supplied. "Some of the defects can hardly be found using standard methods; we have to make use of special testing technology", observes Jürgen Gutjahr, who was in charge of the inspection work at the Airrail Center. The experts from TÜV NORD Systems were in some cases working under extreme pressure during this project - exhibiting both flexibility and an extremely conscientious approach. As Gutjahr says, "our company is quite unique in this sector, as hardly any other technical service providers can supply this level of comprehensive know-how." Material assessments and welding inspections are among the main activities of Michael Krah and his team, and also involve manufacturer qualifications for companies and on-site monitoring and inspection during construction of large bridges and stadiums.
The steel market is very much on the move; China needs a great deal of steel for its own growth, but is still able to export. "We make the world safer with our inspections of structural steel and welding. And we are not really interested in where the steel comes from, but in the quality", says Gutjahr.
