TÜV NORD verifies aviation emission reports – Test run for emissions trading
TÜV NORD continues to develop its activities in the area of climate protection. The inspection service provider TÜV NORD CERT UMWELTGUTACHTER (the environmental arm of TÜV NORD CERT) now offers aircraft operators the possibility of having their emission and tonne-kilometre reports verified. Staring this year, all aircraft operators are obliged to present emission reports. The reports form the basis for the integration of international aviation into the emission trading system of the European Union, due to begin in 2012.
In future, aircraft operators must surrender an emission allowance for each tonne of carbon dioxide emitted. In other words, they may only emit the amount of CO2 into the atmosphere to which they are entitled based on so-called "emission allowances".
The operators must also create emission reports, which have to be verified by an independent and neutral institution such as TÜV NORD.
As Dr. Ortrun Janson-Mundel from TÜV NORD CERT UMWELTGUTACHTER says: "Climate change will be one of the greatest challenges to be faced in future years. As an independent verifying authority, our services are already in demand throughout the world. TÜV NORD CERT already has a great deal of experience in verification of emission reports for stationary installations – and this forms the basis for competent assessments in the aviation field."
All the knowledge and experience of TÜV NORD in the area of aviation is bundled in the "Competence Center Aviation". Work in this sector also involves a high level of understanding for the procedures and requirements of aircraft operators, above all when it comes to technical and environmental aspects.
"In fact, we can offer expertise from both areas", concludes Dr. Janson-Mundel. "Benefits based on our long years of experience with emissions trading and also aviation and airline competence tailored to our clients' needs - our service is second to none."
The airline companies must have their emission reports for the current year verified at the latest by 31 March 2011 for presentation to the German emissions trading authority, Deutsche Emissionshandelsstelle (DEHSt).
