TÜV NORD again verifies CO2 footprint of Hesse Regional Government Authority
Darmstadt: CO2-neutrality by 2030 – this is what Hesse aims to achieve for its Regional Government Authority. TÜV NORD has already checked the carbon footprint of the Authority once, at the start of the project. Now stage two has been reached: TÜV NORD has now verified the greenhouse gas inventories of the Hesse Regional Government Authority for the years 2009 and 2010, thereby continuing to support this future-orientated project.
“Determination and independent certification of the carbon footprint is an important step on the path towards climate neutrality. In comparison with the first carbon footprint in 2008, emissions of greenhouse gases have been considerably reduced. These significant savings can be attributed above all to the fact that many sites are now supplied with green electricity”, says Holger Hoffmann, Head of the Environmental and Climate Protection Department of TÜV NORD CERT, when presenting the certificate to representatives of the Hesse Finance Ministry.
The Finance Ministry is leading the project on behalf of the Federal State of Hesse, as it is responsible for the administration of around 580 sites and 2,000 buildings. Because of their energy consumption, these are the major source of emissions. In comparison with 2008, when the emissions noted by TÜV NORD amounted to 476,223 t CO2eq, it was possible to reduce the greenhouse gases by 92,145 t CO2eq in 2009, amounting to 19.3 %. In 2010, the reduction in comparison with the first year amounted to 38.2 %.
Finance Minister Dr. Thomas Schäfer, accompanied by Environment Minister Lucia Puttrich, presented the CO2 footprint of the federal state for 2009 and 2010 to the public. The figures were more than satisfactory, as he said: “We have been able to reduce CO2 emissions by almost 40 per cent in only two years.” The Minister drew attention to further measures for the near future, including the introduction of unified regional standards for energy efficiency of new buildings and a comprehensive refurbishment programme for existing buildings in Hesse.
