TÜV NORD issues new data sheet: European Approval for Materials for Lean Duplex steel
Hamburg: TÜV NORD has issued a Material Data Sheet for the European Approval of Lean Duplex steel LDX 2101, developed by Outokumpu. Companies, who process the steel or who operate equipments made of austenitic or austenitic-ferritic steels, can use this approval as a basis to employ an alternative material that is qualified in accordance with the European Pressure Equipment Directive. Although the steel is not included in the harmonised EN standards, it still fulfils the basic safety requirements of the PED.
After more than ten years, a new European Approval for Materials/EAM has been issued. This was done for the first time by a German Notified Body, and for the first time for austenitic-ferritic lean duplex steel. The new data sheet bears the number EAM-0045-01.
TÜV NORD first evaluated the lean duplex steel LDX 2101 developed by Outokumpu within the framework of a comprehensive material assessment for a VdTÜV Material Data Sheet. Following this, TÜV NORD applied for a European Approval for Materials in accordance with Article 13 of the Pressure Equipment Directive. With publication of the Approval in the Official Journal of the European Union in March, permission was given to issue the EAM-0045-01 data sheet. The EAM designation of the steel is X2CrMnNiN21-5-1 and the material reference number is 1.4162. There was intensive discussion in the expert committees of the European Union prior to the grant of the Approval, and the formal process of agreement in all Member States of the European Union also had to be completed.
It is assumed that materials for the manufacture of pressure equipment which hold the European Approval for Materials comply with the basic safety requirements of Annex 1 of the Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC.
This means that according to 97/23/EC, Annex I, clause 4.2, material X2CrMnNiN21-5-1 specified in the data sheet has the same status as the austenitic and austenitic-ferritic materials named in the harmonised standard EN 10028-7.
