Noise protection
Workplace
The permanent exposure of employees to noise and vibrations (human vibration) that exceed a specific level and are caused by machinery at the workplace result in diminished performance levels and health problems. The Noise and Vibration Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance (LärmVibrationsArbSchV) became effective in Germany in March 2007. The trigger value was lowered from 85 dB(A) to 80 dB(A).
As a result, the number of employees to be protected increased from four to approximately six million. This affects companies that up until now have not been subject to the legal provisions concerning noise protection.
Companies exceeding the trigger value of 80 / 85 dB(A) at the workplace are required to fulfil the following obligations:
- Consultation and assessment
- Expert measurement and risk assessment
- Load reduction through a noise reduction programme (hearing protection, if necessary as a last resort)
- Marking noisy areas
- Instruction of employees
- Preventive occupational medicine
