Functional safety
More electronic components mean new challenges
In various industries, mechanical components are more and more frequently being replaced or monitored by electronic components. On the one hand, this increases the number of electronic components and systems in the technical system. On the other hand, the networking, interaction, complexity and safety requirements are becoming ever more complex.
As an answer to these new technological challenges, IEC 61508 provides the generic international standard for safety-oriented electrical, electronic and programmable electronic systems. It is supposed to serve as a basis for future sector-specific product standards.
New approach: Holistic consideration of systems
As per standard IEC 61508, it is no longer just a part of the system that is taken into consideration but the entire system within its entire lifecycle. The entire system must reach the required Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of the safety function. The right decisions with regard to safety structures, drafting procedures and tools and the early verification of the development results prevent failed developments and reduce development time and costs.
