TÜV NORD CERT top for certification of climate protection projects

TÜV NORD CERT has taken the lead for quality inspection of climate protection projects based on the Kyoto Protocol. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by the Institute for Applied Ecology and the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). According to the study, TÜV NORD CERT is in top position among the so-called DOEs (Designated Operational Entities) - companies and institutions which assess and certify the quality of climate protection projects.

Projects are assessed based on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The aim of the CDM is to encourage energy producers and others from industrialised nations to implement climate protection projects in developing countries in order to improve their own carbon footprints. The projects are a practical result of the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Protection of 1997.

TÜV NORD CERT certifies around 250 projects each year within the framework of the CDM process.

Some examples:

  • Efficient Fuel Wood Stoves for Nigeria
Special wood-burning stoves were set up in Nigeria. These are easier to use than earlier stoves and at the same time help to conserve wood by burning less (2009).
  • La Esperanza Hydroelectric Project
Use of renewable energies was encouraged through construction of a hydroelectric power plant in Brazil (2009).

Wolfgang Wielpütz, Member of the TÜV NORD CERT Board of Management:
"We are very proud indeed to have been judged the best accredited certification company for CDM projects. Our aim is to drive forward the projects recognised under the scheme and to contribute to the success of the Kyoto Protocol. We are already working at a very high level, but we want to improve still further and, together with our project partners, to play an effective role in the battle against climate change."
