Keep a cool head to drive safely
Within the next few days, Germany will again be in the grip of a heatwave. Medical and traffic experts from TÜV NORD recommend that drivers always have sufficient to drink on board when making long journeys; the most effective drinks for quenching thirst are fruit teas, fruit juices mixed with mineral water or water. The temperature inside a car can rise quickly when the car is standing in a traffic jam with the engine switched off - and the journey to reach the next motorway service station can seem like torture. Therefore it is important to make sure that the vehicle air conditioning is cooling the interior sufficiently. "A rise in temperature from 25 to 35 degrees means that the driver's powers of perception and coordination are reduced by up to 20 per cent", says doctor of medicine Gerald Schubert from MEDITÜV. Because of the danger of catching cold, however, the air conditioning should not be set at less than 25 degrees Celsius, and the vents should not point directly towards the body. Children, in particular, are not used to sitting in a car for several hours, and parents can best occupy their offspring with interesting games such as "Guess the number plate". It is also absolutely essential to plan in sufficient breaks. The higher the temperature is outside, the more often you should stop to take in fresh air for the onward journey.
