Strong interest at Expert Talk on Deep Geothermal Energy - Experts met at DMT in Essen
Around one hundred participants met last Thursday at the “1st Essen Expert Talk on Deep Geothermal Energy” to learn about the current developments in deep-geothermal energy in Germany and abroad. Experts from Germany, Switzerland, the USA, and even a guest from New Zealand, took the technology service provider DMT GmbH & Co. KG up on their invitation to visit them in Essen.
As well as information on hydrothermal and petrothermal exploration plus a presentation of the geothermal supply chain from a geoscientist’s stance, practical experience gained from geothermal projects at the Upper Rhine was shared with the audience of experts. Particular emphasis was placed on the challenges of deep-level geothermal projects in Germany and on induced seismicity.
Among the attendees were representatives from numerous state ministries, federal institutes, district government, research institutes, universities and other associations. Insurers, service providers and consultants were also present together with project promoters and their financers.
"The Essen Expert Talk on Deep Geothermal Energy was a focused workshop with great practical relevance", explained Prof. Dr. Rolf Bracke, Managing Director of the International Centre for Geothermal Energy (Internationales Geothermiezentrum e.V.). "The spectrum of the supply chain, which is increasingly important for future EGS projects and the international markets, was successfully presented and the subject matter linked nicely to Professor Rüter’s lifetime work – his witty commemorative speech on induced seismicity provoked some interesting follow-up discussions."
During the event a tribute was paid to Prof. Dr. Horst Rüter on his 70th birthday. Rüter, who worked for DMT for over 30 years, was in charge of the DMT-Institut für Lagerstätte, Vermessung und Angewandte Geophysik (DMT Institute for Deposits, Surveying and Applied Geophysics). Today, among other things, he serves as Vice President of GtV.
The patrons of the Expert Talk were Internationales Geothermiezentrum e.V., GtV Bundesverband Geothermie e.V., EnergieAgentur.NRW and Deutsche Geophysikalische Gesellschaft e.V.
"We want to offer experts and those involved in deep geothermal energy a platform to exchange views and experience, and at the same add to our series of expert talks in Essen", explained DMT-Managing Director Prof. Dr. Eiko Räkers after the event. "The response from the participants proved that there is strong interest in doing so. Therefore, the event will no doubt be repeated, next time with a different focus", the geophysicist stated.
