A portable mat to bring physical objects into AR
Microsoft’s research project Zanzibar is a flexible, smart mat that is designed to blend digital and physical worlds by sensing touch, gestures, and objects. It can sense and track physical objects, identify their position and allows you to interact through multi touch and hover gestures. The mat is able to uniquely identify objects if tagged with low cost near field communication (NFC) stickers.
This type of platform opens up various possibilities in terms of how people can play, learn and interact between the physical and digital world. According to Microsoft, this project is suitable for interactive games, storytelling, learning applications and to bring physical objects alive in Augmented Reality.
