World’s first fully autonomous ferry launched in Finland

Rolls-Royce and Finferries, a Finnish state-owned ferry operator have recently demonstrated the world’s first fully autonomous passenger ferry. This demonstration took place in the archipelago south of the city of Turku, Finland on a trip between Parainen and Nauvo.

The ferry is equipped with myriad sensors, meshed with Artificial Intelligence software to help it identify and avoid object in its vicinity. The journey from Parainen to Nauvo was fully autonomous but the return journey was remotely controlled by a command center located 50 km away in Turku, which shows that the ferry can be controlled by humans as well, if required.
