Background

The changes in the working world that result from digitalisation, globalisation and sustainability factors require greater agility, innovation, and a contemporary mindset. This is changing the requirements for leadership.

In recent years, management personnel at the TÜV NORD GROUP have developed their own management guidelines for the Group, thus laying the foundation for a standardised understanding of leadership. At the same time, the management guidelines are a profession of value-oriented leadership, and show how important employees are in our company.

The aim is to permanently anchor the new management guidelines in the activities of the managers, and to provide them with orientation in the form of feedback.

THE IDEA

The “LEADING by Example” award seeks out and honours exemplary leadership in the TÜV NORD GROUP, based on best practice examples, and motivates other Group members to derive from this good leadership for themselves.

Become a part of LEADING by Example and apply as a team with your manager from June 24 to August 19, 2021, or nominate a team and its manager, making their practical application of the leadership approach transparent for all employees. With the support of patron Dr Astrid Petersen, we want to continue implementing this award in the long term. The objective is to make role models of good leadership visible throughout the Group.

Example:

  • Employees nominate any manager and the team, and describe the leadership approach applied in practice
  • Manager applies with the employee team and explains leadership approach
  • Management team (e.g. divisional manager including departmental manager, or cluster manager including profit centre manager) applies, describing the leadership approach they collectively use.

The LEADING by Example award will be ceremoniously presented to the top 3 winning teams during the OneHR event in the spring of 2022. In addition to a personalised trophy for one of the three winning teams, they will each receive vouchers for a team incentive or a team event to the value of €5,000, €2,500 and €1,000

THE JURY

Dr Astrid Petersen, Chief Human Resources Officer, is the patron of this award. The jury comprises six international employees and managers, who cannot be nominated by their teams for the award.

Anyone can make a nomination

Any employee with an employment contract in the TÜV NORD GROUP is entitled to participate and can submit an internal best practice example of good leadership (third-party nomination / self-nomination).

Voting by employees

Each of our 10,000 employees will have the opportunity to send in their rating for the top 15. Voting submissions from all employees will be treated confidentially, and will not be accessible to third parties.

Appreciation

The vote of an employees signifies appreciation and recognition of good leadership.

Application criterion

A manager or (management) team holds disciplinary and/or technical responsibility over at least two employees and is incorporated into a company organisation chart.

Selection by jury

The finalists from the voting round will present their best practice examples to the jury in a personal interview, and will explain the approach it represents and the contribution it makes in a question-and-answer session. The jury will then discuss the impressions from the interviews and select the final three winning teams for the award.

Announcement of the winners

The LEADING by Example award will be ceremoniously presented to the top 3 winning teams during the OneHR event in the spring of 2022.The three winning teams will each receive vouchers for a team incentive or a team event to the value of € 5,000, € 2,000 and € 1.000. The top 3 will be announced through internal communication channels.

  • The management guidelines provide orientation for managers and employees of TÜV NORD.
  • LEADING by Example makes good management practice visible, facilitating learning from positive leadership examples.
  • Do your bit to sustainably improve good management at TÜV NORD!
  • Apply as a team with your manager, or nominate a team and its manager, making their practical application of the best practice approach visible for all employees.
  • Provide a short statement to explain how the best practice example is practically applied by the team and the manager. Each statement should be a maximum of 1,000 characters long.
