The word “hackathon” is a neologism coined from the terms “hack” and “marathon”. “Hack” in this case doesn’t however refer to the illegal and criminal hijacking of other people’s computers - instead it’s about thorough, concentrated and results-oriented programming. At a hackathon, expert teams (programmers, technicians, designers, graphic designers, developers etc.) work together on one software product. This can, for instance, be anything from an innovative app to a new kind of online tool. The time frame for the development is highly condensed – the organisers of the hackathon usually reckon with just a few days.
