Metallography

Metallographic examinations at TÜV NORD

For metallographic examination of the macro- and microstructure, samples are taken from a test specimen, ground, polished and etched. TÜV NORD Institute for Materials Testing can examine all common metals and their compounds in this way. The samples are then evaluated with the aid of a light microscope. Metallography is one of the most complex procedures in destructive materials testing. According to relevant regulations, e.g. the grain size, impurities in steel or the structure of a cast material can be classified. Welded joints are evaluated according to the applicable regulations with regard to their microstructure and macrostructure as well as weld irregularities. Surface treatments, such as case hardening or nitriding, as well as coatings, can be characterized and measured. For comprehensive characterization, a small load hardness test is also used with which, for example, the hardening in a welded joint or hardening depths can be determined.
