On the one hand, there are mandatory markings in order to offer goods on a certain market. For example, the CE mark: To protect consumers and simplify the movement of goods in Europe, the EU has laid down requirements with regard to safety and health aspects, including for electrical household appliances, toys, IT, measuring, laboratory and telecommunications equipment and lights. CE-marked products can be sold throughout the EU without further national approvals.
There are also voluntary tests with which manufacturers can document a high sense of quality and responsibility and convince discerning consumers. The GS mark, which stands for Tested Safety and certifies compliance with the requirements of the Product Safety Act, is particularly well known: It shows consumers at first glance that neutral experts have closely examined a product, including the instructions for use, and that there are no safety concerns. Tests for the GS mark are also possible and useful for sports equipment, playground equipment and DIY products in addition to the products subject to CE marking mentioned above.
