What is the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)?
Sustainability - a term that has always come into "fashion" in the past when there were ecological or social problems somewhere in the world. This has changed. Many companies have now also recognised the need for more sustainability if they want to attract and retain qualified employees, stay in business with customers or find new investors. This is all the more important for industries that leave a large ecological footprint and are therefore in the spotlight. This also includes the aluminium producing and processing industry. It is therefore only logical that an initiative has been formed that is dedicated to improving sustainability in the production and processing of aluminium and aluminium products - the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.
ASI is an initiative founded by the industry and many global stakeholders with the aim of improving the sustainability of aluminium and aluminium products. ASI is the only programme of its kind to date to demonstrate and demonstrate responsibility in production, procurement and processing along the entire value chain. The programme and membership are about the opportunity to put commitment and performance in the area of sustainability to the test through a structured self-assessment and independent auditing and certification, as well as to present it transparently and effectively to the outside world.
The target group of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) includes companies in the aluminium producing and processing industry that want to reduce their environmental footprint and improve their sustainability practices. This initiative is aimed at organisations that want to attract and retain qualified employees, strengthen customer relationships and attract new investors by demonstrating their responsibility along the entire value chain through structured self-assessment and independent certification.
Promoting sustainability and self-criticism among members
In order to increase the trust of markets and customer groups, one or more certificates can be obtained with the help of an audit by independent and qualified auditors. It is precisely these certificates, which are issued by ASI, that reinforce the desired external effect. But not only that, the certificates, which are made public online by ASI via various channels, naturally also stimulate commitment within the organisations concerned. Whether recycling rate, energy efficiency or rejects and downtimes, nobody can afford to leave the potential of their employees and partners untapped. The auditors' questions and comments also contribute to this.
The process for ASI certification consists of the following steps:
A quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001 is the ideal basis for companies of all sizes, both nationally and internationally, to demonstrate their expertise and performance. A key advantage is that the standard can be implemented across all sectors - both for production companies and service providers.
Companies often have several management systems. In addition to quality management, they include environmental, energy and occupational health and safety management. Thanks to its "High Level Structure" (HLS), ISO 9001 can be combined with other certifications to form an integrated management system.
Internal workflows, competences and responsibilities within the company are taken into account, as is the regulation of processes in cooperation with customers and business partners. This ensures global comparability and compatibility with other management systems.
ISO 9001 has been fundamentally revised in order to do justice to the increasing complexity of the markets and their environment. The focus of the 2015 revision is on process results and their effectiveness, no longer on documentation. Furthermore, the revision of ISO 9001 gives organisations more flexibility with regard to the implementation of their management system. For example, the standard adapts to today's business realities by also allowing documentation to be computer or web-based.
