What is EMAS?

EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is the environmental management system of the European Union. It supports companies and organisations in continuously improving their environmental performance, using resources efficiently and reliably fulfilling legal requirements.

The EMAS system includes all the requirements of ISO 14001 and goes beyond them: companies analyse their environmental aspects, set themselves environmentally friendly targets, improve their processes and disclose their results annually in a publicly accessible environmental statement.

Why EMAS is particularly relevant today

EMAS supports companies in efficiently meeting current and future legal requirements:

Plants must operate an environmental management system from 2027. With the help of EMAS, the requirements for this can be fulfilled and there are additional benefits.

Companies with high energy consumption (≥ 7.5 GWh/year) must provide evidence of an environmental or energy management system by 18 July 2025. EMAS covers these requirements - including the assessment of efficiency and waste heat measures.

EMAS environmental declarations provide verified and reliable data that is ideal for CSRD reporting. This saves effort and increases the credibility of your sustainability reports.

Important: EMAS does not replace CSRD, it complements it and creates synergy effects for more efficient and transparent reporting.

EMAS is recognised as a privileged system in several regulations. These include fee reductions and simplified authorisation procedures.

A detailed overview of the privileges can be found at

Privileges: EMAS environmental management system

  • Energy audit obligation (EDL-G): EMAS can replace energy audits.
  • Waste & immission control law: fewer official inspections thanks to EMAS registration.
  • Verification Ordinance & Circular Economy Act: Reduced documentation requirements.
  • ISO integration: EMAS fully fulfils ISO 14001 and reinforces it with additional requirements.

Frequently asked questions

EMAS is suitable for companies and organisations of all sizes and sectors that want to systematically improve their environmental performance and reliably fulfil legal requirements. This includes small and medium-sized companies as well as large industrial plants, energy-intensive businesses and public organisations.

EMAS validation may only be carried out by environmental verifiers or environmental verifier organisations that are accredited by the German Accreditation and Licensing Body for Environmental Verifiers (DAU) - such as TÜV NORD CERT Prüf- und Umweltgutachtergesellschaft mbH.

The following documents should be made available prior to the EMAS audit:

  • Draft environmental statement
  • Environmental audit
  • management review
  • Legal register

The duration of the EMAS validation depends on the size of your company, the number of sites, the scope of the data to be checked and possible improvements.

The on-site audit usually takes 1 to 3 days, depending on the complexity of your organisation.

EMAS is based on ISO 14001 and supplements it with key elements:

  • Public environmental statement
  • Stricter requirements for legal compliance
  • Continuous improvement of environmental performance
  • State monitoring of environmental verifiers

The most important differences between EMAS and ISO 14001 can be found in Annex 2 of EU Regulation 2017/1505.
