ISO 22716 / Cosmetics GMP: assures fulfilment of legal requirements
ISO 22716 is a worldwide standard with recommendations for good manufacturing practices for international cosmetic products and household detergents. ISO 22716 is often referred to as “Cosmetics GMP”. International harmonised standard DIN EN ISO 22716 also has quasi legal status based on its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
ISO 22716 assesses the safety and quality of household and personal care products. It includes all the relevant factors along the supply chain including processing of products and initial packaging.
ISO 22716 is relevant for you if your organization works in one or several of the following four areas:
The aim of ISO 22716, often also referred to in the sector as "Cosmetics GMP", is to increase the safety of final products and to protect consumers. ISO 22716 is also a suitable instrument in order to ensure fulfilment of legal requirements. These are laid down in the EU by EC Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. The certification demonstrates to partners and customers that you comply with these rules.
This ISO standard contains organisational and practical advice on the manufacture, control, storage and shipment of cosmetic products and domestic detergents. The emphasis is on the quality-related aspects of the product. Instructions are given on handling the personnel, technical and administrative factors which influence product quality; the guidelines follow the product flow from incoming goods to despatch and can be applied accordingly. However, they do not apply to research and development activities or distribution of finished products, nor do they cover safety aspects for the personnel engaged in the plant, or aspects of protection of the environment.
Good manufacturing practices (GMP) mean practical application of quality assurance in an organization based on appropriate scientific judgement and risk assessment. The aim of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) is to define the steps needed in order to manufacture a product that exhibits certain fixed characteristics. Thorough documentation is a very important element within good manufacturing practices.
Like ISO 22716, the IFS HPC Standard assesses the safety and quality of household and bodycare products.
IFS HPC contains the requirements of ISO 22716, but goes still further.
The following core areas are covered by IFS HPC:
With certification according to ISO 22716, you demonstrate compliance with legislation for good manufacturing practices in relation to cosmetic and bodycare products and detergents. IFS HPC also gives you access to the European retail market as a supplier.
Based on the growing expectations of consumers and an increasingly complex supply chain, certification according to IFS HPC is generally required for suppliers to the European retail trade.
