Certification as Waste Management Company according to EfbV

Conformity Mark certification as Waste Management Company

Certificate as a specialist waste management company: more orders thanks to certified expertise

When it comes to waste disposal, both private individuals and companies are attaching more and more importance to environmentally friendly disposal. Certification in waste management enables companies to build trust and secure contracts. It signals to potential clients that an independent audit has been carried out and that the company is acting in accordance with the law.

Certification is based on the Closed Substance Cycle Waste Management Act and the Ordinance on Specialised Waste Management Companies (EfbV). This sets out all the requirements for companies that collect, transport, store, treat, recycle, dispose of, broker or trade in waste.

In order to become a specialised waste management company within the meaning of the EfbV, a company must itself carry out waste management activities and collect, transport, store, treat, recycle, dispose of, broker or trade in waste on a commercial basis or within the framework of commercial enterprises or public institutions.

All requirements specified in the EfbV regarding the organisation, equipment and activities as well as the requirements regarding the reliability and specialist knowledge/expertise of the company owner and the persons employed by the specialist waste management company must be implemented.

Target group

The target group for waste management certification includes companies that collect, transport, store, treat, recycle or dispose of waste on a commercial basis or as part of public facilities. This certification is aimed at companies that wish to prove their legally compliant and environmentally friendly waste disposal by fulfilling the German Ordinance on Specialised Waste Management Companies (EfbV).

The benefits of EfbV certification

  • Customer acceptance thanks to neutral certification of your authorisation and competence in accordance with the EfbV
  • Acquisition of new customers: large waste producers, such as commercial and industrial companies, generally do not award contracts without a certificate
  • Competitive advantages and procedural privileges:
  • Exemption from the authorisation requirement for collecting, transporting, brokering and trading hazardous waste (Section 54 (3) KrWG)
  • Facilitation/exemption in the verification procedure for hazardous waste

Certification with TÜV NORD

The basis for certification is the conclusion of a surveillance contract, which legalises the performance of the certification audit, the annual surveillance audits and the additional unannounced on-site visits to be carried out.

The certification process for specialised waste management companies can optionally begin with a pre-audit . During the voluntary pre-audit, an auditor is on site at your company and carries out an inventory and a review of your documents.

A pre-audit of your company's eligibility for certification is mandatory in order to apply for approval from the competent authority (Düsseldorf district government) and, following approval, the certification audit is carried out, during which your company is audited and assessed. The audit and assessment are based on

  • the documents submitted by you
  • the on-site audit
  • the report

If the assessment is positive, you will receive the certificate. In order to guarantee quality, an annual inspection is carried out in the form of a surveillance audit.
