What is the e-badge?

Electric cars registered abroad can benefit from the same special privileges as German electric cars. To qualify for these privileges, the vehicle must be identified by an E-badge.

Examples of benefits for vehicle users include:

  • parking vehicles on public roads or paths and the associated charges,
  • the use of public roads, paths or parts thereof specifically designated for this purpose,
  • exemptions from no-entry restrictions

The benefits listed are only valid if they are appropriately signposted or designated.

Who gets the e-badge?

Electric cars with foreign registration may, in accordance with Section 11 of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance, be fitted with a sticker in Germany.

If the vehicle already bears a number plate or sticker issued abroad that confirms its classification as an electric car, no E-sticker is required.

Which vehicles are eligible for a blue E-sticker?

Vehicles within the meaning of the Electric Mobility Act:

  • Battery electric vehicles (BEV)
  • Fuel cell vehicles (FCEV)
  • Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV)

Additional requirements for plug-in hybrid vehicles:

  • carbon dioxide emissions of no more than 50 grams per kilometre driven, or
  • a range of at least 40 kilometres in pure electric mode. (For vehicles first registered before 2018: at least 30 kilometres)

Frequently asked questions about the e-badge

The sticker can be obtained from us via the online form, as well as from the vehicle registration authorities or an organisation authorised to carry out emissions tests.

The e-badge must be displayed clearly on the rear window of the vehicle.

The sticker remains valid for the entire lifetime of the vehicle, provided that neither the engine nor the vehicle’s emissions standard nor its registration number changes.

This means that no annual renewal is required.

Even vehicles with an E-sticker or a foreign E-registration number must have an emissions sticker to enter the low-emission zone!
