Truck driving licence

Driving licence categories C1, C1E, C and CE entitle the holder to drive trucks and road trains in various weight classes. They differ primarily in terms of maximum authorised mass and trailers.

Class C1

Motor vehicles (other than those in categories AM, A1, A2, A, D1 and D)

  • with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3500 kg but not more than 7500 kg and
  • constructed and designed to carry no more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver,

including trailers

  • with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg.

Class C1 at a glance

Minimum age:18 years
Requirements:Category B
Validity:Class C1 is generally issued for 5 years only; thereafter, it is renewed for further periods of 5 years upon presentation of a satisfactory medical examination (health check and ophthalmological report).
Exclusions:-
Notes:For the initial issue, a medical examination and an ophthalmological examination must be submitted as proof of fitness.

Class C1E

A Class B towing vehicle in combination with

  • a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3,500 kg and
  • a maximum authorised mass of the combination not exceeding 12,000 kg

Class C1 towing vehicle in combination with

  • a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg and
  • a maximum authorised mass of the combination not exceeding 12,000 kg

Minimum age:18 years
Requirements:Class C1
Validity:Class C1E is generally issued for 5 years only; thereafter, it is renewed for further periods of 5 years upon presentation of a satisfactory medical examination (health check and ophthalmological report).
Inclusion:Class BE and D1E, provided Class D1 is held
Notes:For the initial issue, a medical examination and an ophthalmological examination must be submitted as proof of fitness.

Class C

Motor vehicles (other than those in categories AM, A1, A2, A, D1 and D)

  • with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 3500 kg and
  • constructed and designed to carry no more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver,

including trailers

  • with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg.

Minimum age:21 years
Validity:Class C licences are generally issued for 5 years only; thereafter, they are renewed for further periods of 5 years upon presentation of a satisfactory medical examination (health check and ophthalmological report).
Inclusion:Class C1
Notes:For the initial issue, a medical examination and an ophthalmological examination must be submitted as proof of fitness. A Class C driving licence may be obtained at the age of 18: a) following completion of the basic qualification under Section 4(1) of the BKrQK b) for persons during or after completion of vocational training in 1. the state-recognised vocational training programme “Professional Driver/ b) for persons during or after completion of vocational training in: 1. the state-recognised vocational training programme “Professional Driver” 2. the state-recognised vocational training programme “Transport Operations Specialist” or 3. a state-recognised vocational training programme in which comparable skills and knowledge for driving motor vehicles on public roads are taught.

Class CE

Class C towing vehicles in combination with

  • a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 750 kg

Class CE at a glance

Minimum age:21 years
Requirements:Category C
Validity:Class C is generally only issued for 5 years; thereafter, it is renewed for further periods of 5 years upon presentation of a positive fitness assessment (health check and ophthalmological report).
Inclusion:Classes BE, C1E and T, as well as DE, provided Class D is held
Notes:For the initial issue, a medical examination and an ophthalmological examination must be submitted as proof of fitness. A Class CE driving licence may be obtained at the age of 18: a) following completion of the basic qualification under Section 4(1) of the German Road Traffic Licensing Act (BKrQK) b) for persons during or after completion of vocational training in 1. the state-recognised vocational training programme “Professional Driver/ b) for persons during or after completion of vocational training in: 1. the state-recognised training occupation “Professional Driver” 2. the state-recognised training occupation “Transport Operations Specialist” or 3. a state-recognised training occupation in which comparable skills and knowledge for driving motor vehicles on public roads are taught.

Additional authorisations

These authorisations apply to all C classes, i.e. C1, C1E, C and CE

A Class C1 driving licence also entitles the holder to drive vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3,500 kg but not exceeding 7,500 kg, which are designed and constructed to carry no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, and which are intended, in particular, for the following specific purpose relevant to the type-approval of the vehicle:

  1. fire service emergency vehicles,
  2. police emergency vehicles,
  3. emergency vehicles of rescue services recognised under state law,
  4. emergency vehicles of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief,
  5. emergency vehicles of other civil protection units,
  6. Ambulances,
  7. Emergency doctor vehicles and ambulances,
  8. Bulletproof vehicles,
  9. Postal, radio and telecommunications vehicles,
  10. Specialised sales vehicles,
  11. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles,
  12. Hearses and
  13. motorhomes.

This applies to driving licences for categories C1E, C and CE respectively.
