The certification of biomethane assesses the proportion of biomethane in natural gas as recorded in the energy balance. TÜV NORD CERT independently verifies compliance with the criteria set out in the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) to substantiate biogas plants’ claims for feed-in tariffs.

Since 2010, gas suppliers have been increasing the proportion of biomethane in the natural gas network. With the ‘Certified Bio-Natural Gas’ certification, TÜV NORD CERT offers gas suppliers the opportunity to document that their gas products contain a defined, verified proportion of biomethane from renewable energy sources.
Within this framework, compliance with the criteria for use as gaseous biomass within the meaning of the Building Energy Act (GEG) can be confirmed.
Take advantage of the EEG
The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) provides for a range of payments for biogas plants and biomethane processing plants. All plant operators, such as farmers, municipal utilities and other energy suppliers, can benefit from this.
The prerequisite is that a recognised body, such as TÜV NORD CERT Umweltgutachter GmbH, confirms compliance with guidelines and limit values. The assessment comprises both a document check and a technical inspection of the relevant plant.
Voluntary certification in accordance with the TÜV NORD standard is based on the Renewable Energy Sources Act, with the aim of promoting the sustainable development of energy supply and conserving fossil fuel resources in the interests of climate and environmental protection. To pass the audit, the gas supplier in question must disclose the origin of the methane from renewable sources, demonstrate its proportion in the natural gas and the method of accounting, and invest in expanding the use of renewable energy sources. The associated certification mark increases customer acceptance of the gas product and confirms the commitment to greater sustainability in energy supply.
Certification is available to all types of gas suppliers – regardless of whether they sell their products to end customers, municipal utilities or other gas supply companies.

Specifically, proof of compliance with the requirements of the EEG entitles the holder to the following bonuses or payments:
Preliminary assessment, certification in accordance with ISCC PLUS and REDcert2, and audits in accordance with the network operator’s specifications:
As an accredited certification body of the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food, TÜV NORD CERT also certifies all interfaces within the ISCC and REDcert systems in accordance with the Biofuel Sustainability Regulation. This is of particular interest to operators of biomethane processing plants. For planned and new plants, TÜV NORD CERT offers a preliminary assessment that contributes to investment security. Compliance with specific requirements of the relevant grid operator for a flexibility premium can also be confirmed. Multiple services can be provided from a single source in a single audit – this saves time and costs; potential disruptions to operational processes are reduced.
