Against the backdrop of international climate targets, industry faces ever-greater challenges in making an effective contribution to climate protection. Carbon management can offer a useful instrument, and traditionally consists of several steps:
TÜV NORD CERT is accredited to perform verifications in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14064-3:2020 and issue you with a corresponding certificate for your carbon footprint after successful verification.
Carbon footprint verification is designed for all companies and organizations seeking to present a transparent and credible picture of their product carbon footprint, particularly for use in supply chains and networks such as Catena-X. Through verification, companies can accurately determine their CO₂ emissions and communicate them effectively.
In addition to the steps mentioned above, you can highlight your additional commitment. After successfully verifying your carbon footprint in accordance with TN-CC 020, TÜV NORD also offers verification of your financial climate contribution. We would be happy to verify this step as well.
It is often necessary and beneficial to first review the calculation approach for determining the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF). This is particularly useful when a large number of individual PCFs need to be determined for a product group. Validation according to Annex C of DIN EN ISO 14067 in conjunction with DIN EN ISO 14064-3 provides additional certainty regarding the completeness and accuracy of the chosen approach and confirms its fundamental applicability.
The exchange of Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) via Catena-X is becoming increasingly important for the automotive industry and its suppliers. This requires traceable, reliable and standard-compliant emissions data.
TÜV NORD supports companies in the verification and validation of Product Carbon Footprints in accordance with Catena-X requirements and confirms the conformity of the calculation methodology, data set and documentation. This independent confirmation enhances the credibility of the PCF data, builds trust among customers and business partners, and supports compliance with requirements within the Catena-X network.
In general terms, the Carbon Footprint is the sum of greenhouse gas emissions which are emitted directly or indirectly by people, services or products at a certain time or over a certain period. The higher the emissions, the larger the carbon footprint; the lower the emissions, the smaller the footprint and the less impact on the climate.
The sum of all the greenhouse gas emissions represents the carbon footprint. It may be that upon closer consideration, emissions can be avoided or reduced at source. All those that remain can be voluntary offset through the purchase of carbon offset certificates, so-called carbon credits. This is referred to as “Carbon Neutrality” or reference can be made to “carbon neutral” organizations or products etc.
You are free to select the area of application for the verification of the Carbon Footprint, and this is noted on the certificate. It can apply for example to one specific site, all sites in Germany, all branches in Europe, all production facilities, Product X or all products from Brand XY. Areas which are not taken into account are also noted. The inventory boundary for the verification can also be freely selected, but should include all the relevant emission sources (95 %). For the Product Carbon Footprint, a choice has to be made between two approaches: “Cradle to gate” and “Cradle to grave”.
No, as we are an independent assessment body, by law we are not permitted to verify our own work. The carbon footprint calculation (inventory) which takes place before the verification itself has to be provided by our client or by a consultant commissioned by our client. We will be pleased to send a list of consultants upon request.
The time period between the audit and the issue of the certificate is generally between 2 and 5 weeks. Please remember that data has to be prepared before the audit, and the inventory calculation along with the relevant evidences have to be presented for the audit itself.
TÜV NORD CERT has comprehensive knowledge in the area of sustainability and climate protection, and can also offer national and international references. We are accredited by the German accreditation body, DAkkS in accordance with ISO 14065 for verification of carbon footprints to ISO 14064-3 and for verification within the framework of the European Emissions Trading Scheme. We are also accredited by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in order to validate and verify international climate protection projects.
