Safe, Efficient and Compliant Port Operations
As critical infrastructure, ports must meet high requirements for safety, availability, energy supply and compliance. TÜV NORD supports port operators, terminal operators, port authorities as well as energy and industrial companies with independent testing, inspection and certification services to reduce risks and ensure reliable operations.

Ports play a vital role in logistics, energy supply and industrial value creation. Together with inland and maritime shipping, they are evolving from traditional cargo handling locations into integrated energy and logistics hubs. The energy transition, onshore power supply (OPS), automation, digitalisation and increasing security requirements are fundamentally reshaping port planning, operations and infrastructure.
TÜV NORD has extensive experience in the inspection, assessment and certification of complex technical installations and critical infrastructure. Whether port facilities, cargo handling equipment, energy infrastructure or interconnected systems, we provide reliable assurance wherever safety, operational availability and regulatory compliance are critical. Through independent inspections, assessments and certifications, we help the industry safeguard investments, meet regulatory requirements and deliver transformation projects safely, efficiently and sustainably.

Safe. Available. Future-Ready.
Port handling equipment such as container cranes, gantry cranes and mobile cranes typically requires inspections prior to initial commissioning, as well as following major modifications or alterations. In addition, periodic inspections are carried out to ensure operational safety and availability. Depending on the type of equipment, operating conditions and applicable national regulations, condition assessments and special inspections may also be required. The scope and frequency of inspections are determined by statutory obligations and the specific operating environment.
The inspection of onshore power supply (OPS) systems includes the assessment of electrical safety, compliance with applicable standards and regulations, and the review of technical documentation. It also considers the safe commissioning of the installation and the interaction of all relevant system components and interfaces. The objective is to ensure the safe, reliable and compliant operation of the system, as well as the secure supply of electrical power to connected vessels.
TÜV NORD supports operators of critical infrastructure with independent assessments, risk analyses and technical safety evaluations. This includes the identification of vulnerabilities, the assessment of resilience and security levels, and the development of appropriate measures to reduce risks. Based on these assessments, port operators can demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements and strengthen the resilience of their infrastructure in a targeted and systematic manner.
