Drawing on its many years of experience, TÜV NORD supports you by carrying out inspections, assessments and evaluations of your lift systems, thereby contributing to the safety of technical systems and installations in buildings.

We carry out all types of lift inspections: upon placing on the market, prior to initial commissioning and at regular intervals, in accordance with various inspection schedules. We also conduct investigations in the event of accidents or damage.

Operators of lifts, which are classified as installations requiring monitoring, are responsible at all times for the safe operation of their installations. In Germany, the Act on Installations Requiring Monitoring (ÜAnlG) and the Industrial Safety Regulation (BetrSichV). This applies to all lift systems. Where such systems are classified as requiring supervision, they may only be inspected by authorised inspection bodies (ZÜS).
To ensure that the legal requirements are reliably met, TÜV NORD, as an authorised inspection body (ZÜS), carries out the periodic and interim inspections required throughout the system’s service life. Our ASIS II lift inspection system provides a convenient alternative to test weights.
The inspections are carried out by independent and competent experts. All lift systems must be inspected annually, alternating between the biennial main inspection and the biennial interim inspection. In individual cases, a different inspection schedule may be specified.

As the operator of a lift or lift system, you must take the risks posed by cyber threats into account as part of your risk assessment. You may have identified a cybersecurity deficiency in your inspection report: “Documentation on the management of cyber threats has not been provided.”

Fire service lifts are a vital means of rescue and transport for emergency services personnel. In an emergency, the operational safety and functionality of the lifts are crucial to the emergency services’ ability to carry out their work.
The interaction between building services and the various trades involved is of particular importance in this regard. Safe operation is only guaranteed if fire service lifts ‘communicate’ with other safety devices in an emergency. For this reason, the scope of the periodic inspection for fire service lifts in TRBS 1201 Part 4 has been expanded to include Annex 3.
Under the Industrial Safety Regulation, fire service lifts used for firefighting and evacuation under the supervision of the fire service are subject to inspection. To ensure that the fire service lift functions correctly even in the event of an emergency, the necessary documents (compliance check) are verified as part of the main inspection and an extended functional test is carried out. Since 2021, all lifts as defined by the Lifts Directive must be fitted with a two-way communication system, as required by the amended Operational Safety Ordinance of 2015. The two-way communication system enables a direct voice link between people in the lift car and an emergency service that is available at all times, even in the event of a power cut. It replaces the previous alarm button and offers greater safety than one-way communication systems. Retrofitting is not complicated and must be approved by an authorised inspection body such as TÜV NORD. The TÜV Association provides a list of questions and answers regarding the retrofitting requirement.
The amended Industrial Safety Regulation came into force in June 2015 and applies to employers who provide work equipment, and to operators of installations requiring supervision who are treated as equivalent to employers.
The TÜV NORD inspector affixes the QR code to the inspected system in the form of a sticker. Once registered, system operators or authorised users can scan the QR code at any time, conveniently and without the need for paper. The code is decoded automatically using the relevant app, and the user is directed straight to the relevant TÜV NORD website to view the test certificate and further system data.
