In order to curb climate change and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, various sectors within the European Union are subject to mandatory emissions trading. The companies concerned must record and report their greenhouse gas emissions and surrender emission allowances to the competent authority. The legal basis for the monitoring and reporting of emissions and production data of plant and aircraft operators is provided by the EU Emissions Trading Directive 2003/87/EC, implemented nationally in the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading Act (TEHG), and the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/2066 (MVO). The verification of emissions reports and allocation data reports as well as the accreditation of test centres is regulated by the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/2067 (AVR). As part of the accreditation for the verification of emission reports and allocation data reports, TÜV NORD also tests
All companies that operate installations or flights listed in Annex I of the Accreditation and Verification Regulation (EU) 2018/2067 to the European Emissions Trading Directive 2003/87/EC. Operators of energy generation facilities, manufacturing industries (e.g., petroleum refineries, producers of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, companies in the ceramics and chemical industries, or paper manufacturers), and aircraft operators (including EU CORSIA reports).
In addition to meeting legal requirements, the carbon footprint of your company can be calculated based on the data collected annually by considering a few additional emission sources and verified in accordance with the international standard DIN EN ISO 14064.
This means:
The respective company must fulfil the obligations arising from the emissions trading system. Specifically, this means the preparation of correct emissions, allocation data and tonne-kilometre reports, which must be submitted to the inspection body for verification in a timely manner. As part of the verification process, it must be ensured that TÜV NORD has access to all necessary data and information.
With the audits by an independent body, operators of installations or flights subject to emissions trading fulfil the legal requirements imposed on them by the European Emissions Trading Directive and the German Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading Act. The aim of these regulations is to maintain a functioning system throughout the European Union with which the member states can fulfil their obligations to reduce greenhouse gases and thus help to mitigate climate change.
TÜV NORD CERT has extensive expertise and national and international references in the field of climate protection. We are accredited by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) in accordance with ISO 14065 for the verification of greenhouse gas balances (carbon footprints) in accordance with ISO 14064-3 and for verification within the framework of the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS). We are also accredited by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to validate and verify international climate protection projects.
