Driving licence categories D1, D1E, D and DE cover the driving of buses. All categories are valid for five years and require a medical examination for renewal.

Motor vehicles (other than those in categories AM, A1, A2 and A)

| Validity period: | Class D1 is generally only issued for 5 years; thereafter, it is renewed for further periods of 5 years upon presentation of a positive fitness assessment (occupational or occupational health report, or MPU report and ophthalmological report). |

Notes: | For the initial issue, proof of fitness must be provided in the form of an occupational health report or MPU report and an ophthalmological report. The driving licence may be obtained at the age of 18: for persons during or after completion of vocational training in 1. the state-recognised vocational training programme “Professional Driver”, 2. the state-recognised vocational training programme “Transport Operations Specialist”, or 3. a state-recognised vocational training programme in which comparable skills and knowledge for driving motor vehicles on public roads are taught. |
Class D1 towing vehicles in combination with

| Notes: | When applying for a licence for the first time, proof of fitness must be provided in the form of an occupational or occupational health assessment, or an MPU assessment, and an ophthalmological assessment.
The driving licence can be obtained at the age of 23: following an accelerated basic qualification through training and examination in accordance with Section 4(2) of the Professional Driver Qualification Act (BKrQK)
The driving licence can be obtained at the age of 21: - following successful completion of basic qualification in accordance with Section 4(1) of the BKrQG, or - following an accelerated basic qualification through training in accordance with Section 4(2) of the BKrQK for regular services up to 50 km.
The driving licence may be obtained at the age of 20 for persons during or after completion of vocational training in 1. the state-recognised apprenticeship "Professional Driver", 2. the state-recognised apprenticeship “Transport Operations Specialist” or 3. a state-recognised vocational training programme in which comparable skills and knowledge for driving motor vehicles on public roads are taught.
The driving licence may be obtained at the age of 18: for persons during or after completion of vocational training in 1. the state-recognised vocational training programme “Professional Driver”, 2. the state-recognised apprenticeship "Transport Operations Specialist" or 3. a state-recognised apprenticeship in which comparable skills and knowledge for driving motor vehicles on public roads are taught in regular service up to 50 km. |
