The type test takes place before a vehicle is launched on the market and serves to prove that a vehicle type fulfils all legal requirements as part of the type approval process.
However, even after successful type approval and launch of the product, the legislator prescribes various measures to ensure compliance with approved characteristics. Once approval has been granted, the Conformity of Production (CoP) ensures during series production that all vehicles produced continue to conform to the originally tested and approved type, which is safeguarded by quality assurance and official monitoring.
After placing on the market, market surveillance begins: Authorities randomly check vehicles on the market to detect deviations or infringements and, if necessary, initiate measures such as recalls. At the same time, the In-Service Conformity (ISC) obliges manufacturers to monitor vehicles in operation over their useful life and prove that they continue to comply with the regulations. This is supplemented by In-Service Verification (ISV), in which the authorities check the vehicles in real operation independently of the manufacturer to ensure compliance with the requirements under actual conditions of use.
