Anyone travelling abroad by car should find out in good time about any tolls they may have to pay. In many European countries, there is a charge for using motorways, bridges or tunnels. On this page, you will find an overview of toll regulations in popular travel destinations, as well as important tips on how to pay and avoid fines.

In many EU member states, there is a charge for using motorways and expressways. Depending on the country, you will either pay a distance-based toll or need to purchase a vignette. To ensure there are no nasty surprises on the road, we have summarised the key information for you.
Please note: Not all sections of the motorway or expressway network are subject to tolls. Depending on the country, payment is made either upon entering or exiting the network.
As well as Austria (‘Pickerl’), you will also need a vignette for motorways and expressways in the following countries:
Depending on the country, vignettes are available with different validity periods. Additional charges may apply for tunnels, bridges and Alpine passes – e.g. in Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Andorra, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Montenegro and Albania.
The following countries do not currently charge a toll on passenger cars:
However, in some of these countries, a city toll may apply or charges may be levied for certain bridges.
Failure to pay route-based tolls may also result in additional charges and fines.
