General traffic control

If you are caught up in a traffic check, it is important to remain calm. In general, you must obey the signs and commands of the police to stop.

Pull over, remain seated and open the window. It is recommended that you keep your hands on the steering wheel and avoid hasty movements. Follow the instructions if you are obliged to do so in order to be able to continue driving quickly.

What can be checked during a traffic stop?

  • Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document)
  • Driving licence
  • HU sticker
  • Overloading of the vehicle
  • Depth of the tyre tread
  • Light and brake system
  • Authorisation for attached car parts
  • Complete auxiliary and emergency equipment
  • Fitness to drive of the driver

Without reasonable suspicion, you do not have to consent to these measures:

  • Breath alcohol and drug test (however, the police may order a blood test if there is concrete suspicion)
  • Checking the mobile phone
  • Extensive personal check (incl. search of the person)
  • Search of the vehicle
  • Checking the identity card

This has consequences:

  • If you ignore signs and stop orders from the police, a fine of up to 105 euros and a point in Flensburg will be imposed; novice drivers must also complete an advanced training seminar and their probationary period will be extended by two years.
  • If you forget your driving licence and/or vehicle registration document, the fine is 10 euros each.
  • Incomplete first aid and emergency equipment or an invalid expiry date are penalised with five euros (first aid kit) or 15 euros (warning triangle or high-visibility waistcoat).
