How to get to the registration office with an unregistered vehicle

Without license plate

You are not allowed to drive an unauthorised vehicle on public roads. But you can piggyback it. Transport it on a suitable vehicle transporter or trailer.

With temporary license plates

Apply for the temporary licence plate at the road traffic office. You will need your identity card and confirmation of cover from an insurance company. You will receive a blank vehicle licence in which you enter the vehicle data. The short-term licence plate is valid for a maximum of 5 days and does not have to be returned.

With red license plate

Reliable car dealers and garages have red licence plates that they can use. Ask whether your garage will present the vehicle to us for inspection.

With canceled license plate

If your temporarily deregistered vehicle still has a cancelled registration plate, you can drive straight to the re-registration and the main inspection, including the emissions test. The only restriction is that the registration office must be in the same or a neighbouring registration district. However, you must ensure that these journeys are already covered by motor vehicle liability insurance.

You do not have to inform the registration office in advance. However, make sure that the insurance is not only valid from the date of registration.
