A product's lifecycle reflects its environmental impact

What does a life cycle assessment (LCA) of a product show?

A life cycle assessment (LCA) provides a structured evaluation of a product’s potential environmental impacts across defined life cycle stages—always in relation to the objective and scope of the study as specified in the report. The demand for accurate, reliable, and transparent environmental information is growing, both among consumers and within industry and commerce.

As an independent verification and validation body, we review your existing LCA study in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14040 and DIN EN ISO 14044 (critical review) for consistency, transparency, and traceability of the documentation. A “critically reviewed life cycle assessment” creates a more reliable basis for external communication and market requirements, thereby strengthening confidence in your company’s reported environmental claims.

In addition, we offer to conduct a critical review of the LCA methodology for multiple products within a product group. This can, for example, be carried out as a comprehensive review project across a product portfolio or across products from different production sites. This approach creates a consistent, uniform methodological basis for product lines and facilitates robust comparability within the defined framework conditions.

Take advantage of our impartial, independent, and rigorous review to demonstrate the quality and credibility of your LCA documentation to customers and stakeholders.

Who should conduct a critical review of the life cycle assessment?

A critical review of the life cycle assessment is intended for companies and organizations that already have an LCA study and wish to validate it in a manner that is compliant with standards and transparent. Typical use cases include

  • Companies that communicate LCA results to customers, partners, or other third parties
  • Organizations that use environmental information as a basis for product decisions or strategic assessments
  • Companies subject to regulatory or market requirements for verifiable environmental information
  • Consulting firms or study authors who require an independent critical review of their LCA methodology

A prerequisite for the critical review is a documented, verifiable life cycle assessment study. The review does not replace the preparation of a life cycle assessment, but rather evaluates the consistency, appropriateness, and transparency of the study in question.

What are the benefits of having TÜV NORD conduct a critical review of the life cycle assessment?

TÜV NORD conducts an independent critical review of your existing life cycle assessment study in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14040 / DIN EN ISO 14044. The aim of the review is to increase the traceability, transparency, and credibility of the reported environmental information—especially when LCA results are used internally or communicated to customers, partners, or other third parties.

Your benefits at a glance:

  • Reliable basis for decision-making: A critically reviewed LCA increases the traceability and transparency of the study. It serves as a robust foundation for internal decisions and external requirements. Thanks to our years of experience in reviewing life cycle assessments and our broad portfolio of sustainability services, we can provide you with optimal support through a critical review of your LCA.
  • External trust & credibility: The independent review by TÜV NORD as a neutral body strengthens the credibility of the communicated environmental information and supports a consistent, verifiable sustainability profile.

Frequently asked questions on the critical review of a LCA

A critical review is an independent assessment of an existing LCA study to determine whether its methodology, data, reporting, and interpretation are documented and verifiable in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 14040/14044.

The LCA is based on ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, with ISO 14044 also setting out requirements for reporting and verification.
In addition, ISO 14071 is frequently used to guide the design of the verification process (particularly with regard to the verification process and qualifications).

The critical review process consists of 6 concise steps:

  1. Initial Contact / Non-binding Initial Consultation:
Please use our short contact form to ask questions or to schedule a non-binding initial consultation. During this consultation, we will clarify the scope of the requested critical review (LCA study, scope, intended use). If you already have specific ideas and do not need an initial consultation, you can also submit a request directly via our quote form.
  2. Quote Request:
You can request a non-binding quote using the form “Request a quote for a critical review of a life cycle assessment”.
  3. Customized Quote:
We will prepare a customized quote based on the information you provide.
  4. Document Submission:
A verifiable LCA report is required, including key information (such as objective & scope, functional unit, system boundaries, cut-off, data basis, LCIA/LCI evidence). The complete LCA report and LCI/LCIA evidence are typically provided no later than 2 weeks before the audit.
  5. Audit/Review & Findings:
The audit is conducted remotely or on-site; review findings are documented and corrections are evaluated as necessary; the results are then finalized.
  6. Final Documents & Declaration of Validity:
Upon successful completion, you will receive the audit report and, in addition, a declaration of validity for your product/scope.

Typically, the review process takes about two months to complete (approximate estimate). The actual duration depends primarily on the scope, complexity, and completeness of the submitted documents.

A life cycle assessment (LCA) is the standardized basis for transparently quantifying the environmental impacts of a product system over its entire life cycle (ISO 14040/14044). As such, it serves as a “building block” for many downstream applications.
For example, Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) are based on this as a standardized communication format (Type III) in accordance with ISO 14025. In the construction context, EN 15804 is frequently used, whereby the EPD translates the LCA results into a uniform, externally usable format.
Additionally, the importance of reliable product environmental data is increasing due to new EU frameworks: The Construction Products Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 promotes digital, structured product information and introduces the Digital Product Passport (DPP) for construction products as a tool for traceability. Here, robust LCA/EPD-based data is becoming increasingly valuable.

A verifiable LCA report is required, including key information (such as objectives and scope, functional unit, system boundaries, cut-off, data sources, and LCIA/LCI documentation). The TÜV‑NORD‑Checklist outlines the required content and must be submitted in advance.

Auditors evaluate the LCA study and its documentation. This includes, in particular, compliance with standards (e.g., ISO requirements), the scientific and technical plausibility of the methodology, the adequacy and suitability of the data (in relation to the study’s objectives and scope), and transparent, internally consistent reporting.

The assessment does not determine whether a product is “good” or generally “environmentally friendly.”  Thus, there is no general product evaluation; rather, the review focuses solely on the traceability and regulatory compliance of the life cycle assessment study.

If the audit is successful, you will receive an audit report containing the audit findings and a certificate of validity specifying the product and scope; optionally, a certification mark may be agreed upon for communication purposes (in accordance with the rules of use, based on the version and scope).

For a product-specific life cycle assessment, it generally remains valid as long as the data, assumptions, scope, and processes remain unchanged; for the life cycle assessment methodology within a product group, the declaration of validity is typically valid for one year and is usually extended through a follow-up audit, provided that the key boundary conditions remain unchanged.

An increasing number of EU regulations and initiatives are reinforcing the life-cycle approach and the verifiability of environmental information. For example, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) establishes a framework for sustainable products and Digital Product Passports (DPP). The Construction Products Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 also provides for digital product information, including DPP elements, for construction products; at the same time, the EU initiative on Green Claims aims to ensure more reliable, verifiable environmental claims. This underscores the increased importance of critically evaluating LCAs.

A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) captures only the greenhouse gas emissions of a product throughout a defined life cycle and reports them as CO₂ equivalents (CO₂e / Global Warming Potential); this is often done in accordance with ISO 14067. By verifying the Product Carbon Footprint, companies and organizations gain a robust basis for transparently recording and credibly communicating their product-specific CO₂ emissions.

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) goes significantly further: In addition to climate impact, it also evaluates other environmental impact categories (e.g., acidification, eutrophication, resource consumption). Methodologically, an LCA follows the requirements of ISO 14040/ISO 14044. A critical review enhances the transparency, traceability, and credibility of the LCA study, particularly with regard to external communication.
