Investigations according to Firearms Law

Clarifying doubts

However, you have the possibility to clarify these doubts vis-à-vis the weapons authority by submitting an appraisal proving that the events responsible for the doubts in the first place were exceptions and that there is no doubt with regards to your general reliability.

No toys

Handling weapons demands special responsibilities. Weapons can quickly put people at risk and injure them. Therefore, the law demands weapons inspections in certain cases. TÜV NORD Mobility offers corresponding inspections.

Certification of the personal suitability of 18- to 25-year-old weapons users

The legislation restructuring weapons law (WaffRNeuregG) demands, in § 6 Section 3, that weapons license card applicants provide certification on their "personal suitability", insofar as the applicant is between 18 and 25. Hunters are excluded from this regulation. A further exception is when the weapons license card application is for sports firearms that can be used from the age of 18.

Prudent protective measures

By demanding certification of the personal suitability, the government wants to avoid people with insufficiently mature characters owning weapons. Since April 1, 2003, they have therefore had to certify their personal suitability. In other words, they must provide evidence that they are sufficiently mature.

Meaningful appraisal

You can provide evidence of your suitability by means of a corresponding appraisal. You as the commissioning party and sole recipient of the appraisal will be informed in clear words of the reasons for the appraisal decision.

Appraisal process

Select an appraisal centre near to you, arrange an appointment by telephone and transfer the examination fee.

You then visit us on the chosen examination day, bringing your ID card with you.

Then you will go through the following stages:

  • Performance tests (e.g. reaction time)
  • Questionnaires
  • Appraiser interview
  • If necessary, medical examination (as if visiting your GP)

Expect your visit to last between three and five hours. Within two weeks, you will receive a meaningful appraisal in duplicate. You can submit one of these to the relevant authorities. In the case of a positive appraisal and you fulfil all other prerequisites (necessity, expertise, minimum age, etc.), you will receive the weapons license card you have requested.

Appraisals in the event of doubts relating to the personal suitability as per the weapons law §6 II

Since April 1, 2003, your relevant weapons authority has had the obligation - in the event of certain "facts" as per §6 Section 2 of the WaffRNeuRegG - to cast doubt on your reliability and to demand a certificate on your mental and physical suitability to handle firearms and ammunition.
