Professional damage assessments for car dealerships and repair shops

You’ll be familiar with this scenario: a customer arrives at your car dealership or garage with a car that’s been in an accident and wants to know how much it will cost to settle the claim. That’s where our TÜV NORD loss adjusters come in; their report provides the basis for settling the claim. The extent of the damage is assessed and documented – in an impartial and market-oriented manner.

What does a TÜV NORD damage assessment report cover?

  • Assessment of damage to the vehicle
  • Assessment of the roadworthiness of the damaged vehicle
  • Description of the work required to repair the damage
  • The scope of repairs is determined
  • A damage cost estimate is drawn up
  • The vehicle’s value is determined (replacement value, dealer selling price, dealer purchase price)
  • The vehicle’s reparability is assessed
  • The repair time or replacement time is specified
  • Assessments regarding compensation for loss of use are made
  • The vehicle’s depreciation is determined
  • Residual value of the damaged vehicle is determined

Damage assessments for cars, commercial vehicles and motorhomes

TÜV NORD’s experts prepare damage assessment reports for a wide variety of vehicle types. These include:

  • Passenger cars
  • Vans
  • Commercial vehicles
  • Lorries
  • Buses
  • Motorhomes
  • Caravans

For every vehicle category — including electric vehicles and hybrids — the extent of the damage, the repair method and the financial implications are assessed on a case-by-case basis. This provides your service advisers with a sound basis for settling claims.

Statement on the cause of the damage

Where it is possible to provide more detailed information on the cause of the damage, this will also be recorded in the damage assessment report. Possible causes may include:

  • Accident damage
  • Wildlife damage
  • Burglary damage
  • Theft damage
  • Fire damage

You can also expect us to provide an assessment of the damage pattern: does the damage observed correspond to the stated cause of the damage or the described sequence of events? We provide an expert assessment of this in the damage report.

Description of the damage

TÜV NORD’s loss adjusters document the damage using photographs. This involves taking photos of the vehicle as a whole – for example, from the front left and rear right – as well as of the damaged areas and parts.

Assessment of accident damage and calculation of repair costs

The TÜV NORD damage assessment report lists the damaged parts. We distinguish between parts that need to be replaced and those that can be repaired. On request, we can also provide a repair cost estimate.

The estimate sets out all items transparently:

  • labour costs,
  • paintwork,
  • spare parts,
  • ancillary work.

This provides car dealerships and garages with a market-based, legally sound basis for settling claims with the customer’s insurance company.

Information on pre-existing and previous damage

This is another area of expertise covered by the reports provided by TÜV NORD: our assessors have a trained eye and can identify pre-existing damage, as this has a significant impact on the replacement value, the residual value and the depreciation. Any pre-existing damage is documented photographically and attached to the report.

Replacement value

TÜV NORD also calculates the replacement value. To do this, we use existing calculation programmes as well as quotes from the motor trade to arrive at a figure in line with market conditions. If a replacement value does not need to be determined because it is not required for the settlement, we can also omit this step.

Residual value assessment

If the repair costs amount to approximately 60 per cent of the replacement value, we will determine the residual value. The residual value is based on the realisable market value of the vehicle, naturally in its damaged condition.
